Strategic voting is probably best explained as casting a vote against a party rather than for one you support. Chances of defeating the Conservative candidate in your area are greater if everyone concentrates their efforts on electing the candidate with the best chance of winning against him. You can find out which candidate this is in your area by using our strategic voting guide.
No. You cannot strategically vote in this case. If you strongly support a politically party with little chance of winning against your Conservative candidate, but defeating the Conservatives is important to you, we recommend that you use our voting guide to find a district near you where your party is listed as the best bet. Volunteer your time or donate to this candidate's campaign, but strategically vote for the other party in your own area. This way you can concentrate your efforts on defeating the Conservatives while helping your party.
A swing district is an area where the margin between the number of votes cast in the last election for the Conservative candidate, and the candidate with best return against them is particularly small. This is important because if the Conservative won, this is an area where overthrowing them in the next election is somewhat easier. If the Conservative lost, this district is at high risk of falling to the Conservatives next time. For this reason special effort should be taken to support the candidate with the best bet against the Conservative candidate next election.
It is illegal for a candidate to be fired by their party or step down after the Election Canada deadline has passed. Therefore the candidate will still appear on the ballot. If they win they will be obliged to take their seat in the House of Commons. Political parties must commit to stand behind their candidates after the deadline has passed. The recommendations given in the voting guide are not hand-picked by anyone. They are generated by computer based on the most recent election return on file for that district from Elections Canada raw data. At the moment this website does not consider any polls conducted aside from official election returns. We have no intention at the moment to manually change the recommendation for any district — however, if the party listed as the best bet against the Conservative in a district isn't running a candidate at all by the deadline, or the endorsed party is not the one that received the best returns against the Conservative in the last election, please contact us so that we may correct the error.
If you are colour blind use the accessibility options to select an alternative style sheet. The voting guide will automatically be recoded in a way that accomidates colour blindness. At the moment there is no style sheet specific for colour blindness. If you have one, please send it to me.
No. At the moment there is no french language version of this website online. There is however an option in the voting guide to display french language names where available from the Elections Canada raw data. If you cannot read english well we recommend you use Google Translate. If you wish to volunteer your time to translate this website into another language I'm certainly not stopping you from doing so.
